Vallabhdas Kanji Limited (VKL Warehouse)

A Mattancherry warehouse where Biennale works hold memory, labour and loss.

Two large, irregularly shaped wooden panels hang on a black wall in a corner, each set against a white, torn-paper-style background. The panel on the left is light brown with a textured surface and a circular feature near its center. The panel on the right is larger, with swirling patterns in gold, brown, and dark tones. Between the panels, two small screens are mounted side by side, one displaying bright green imagery and the other showing blue and white imagery. The floor below is concrete.

Vallabhdas Kanji Limited’s warehouse on Bazaar Road in Mattancherry is one of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale’s exhibition venues. During the Students’ Biennale, linked works here have turned the old warehouse into a place for art about memory, displacement, surveillance, ecology, labour, language loss, unsafe homes, inherited ritual, and the body’s memory of violence. Biennale editions are temporary: the sixth ended on 31 March 2026 and the next is planned for 2027-28, so check the current programme before visiting.
