Pepper House
A former spice warehouse turned courtyard, gallery, café and library.
Pepper House is a former spice warehouse on Calvetty Road in Fort Kochi, now a courtyard café with a gallery, design shop and library. You will find it near Hotel Seagull, at 11/10 A&B. It is open 11am to 7pm.
Two historic godowns, the dockside warehouses of the spice trade, face each other across a courtyard. Each of them is two storeys high. One of them faces the street, and the other overlooks the water. Goods once waited in that courtyard to be loaded onto ships in the harbour. Both buildings have Dutch-style clay roofs.
Pepper House is one of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale’s principal venues, alongside Aspinwall House and Anand Warehouse in Mattancherry, so what hangs inside changes with each edition. The building has extensive studio space for artists to make work, and Francesco Clemente’s Pepper Tent installation was shown inside it in 2014. Its library is called the Laboratory of Visual Art.
