AB Salem Road
Named for Abraham Barak Salem, a Cochin Jewish campaigner.
A.B. Salem Road in Kochi is a small road named after Abraham Barak Salem, a Cochin Jewish campaigner. The road was named in his honour after he died.
Salem was born in Cochin in 1882. He was nicknamed the “Jewish Gandhi” for his satyagraha campaign against a rule that put the meshuchrarim at the back of the Paradesi Synagogue, or outside it. He boycotted the synagogue for a time to press the case.
He lived in Cochin until his death in 1967, aged 85, in Mattancherry. He was also Municipal Chairman of Mattancherry. The largest open ground in Cochin was once called Salem Maidan, after his public speaking in Malayalam.
