Jew Street
Its name preserves the memory of Kochi’s Jewish community.
A historic street in Mattancherry’s Jew Town, running through the area around the Paradesi Synagogue. Antique shops, galleries, cafés, and old trading buildings line the street. Its name preserves the history of Kochi’s Jewish community and the commercial quarter that grew around the synagogue. The street is pedestrian-friendly and walkable; the Paradesi Synagogue (ticket ₹10/₹100) and Mattancherry Palace are nearby. Best visited morning or late afternoon when shops are open and light is good for photography.
Did you know
During the Portuguese plunder of Mattancherry’s Jew’s Town in 1662, the Jewish community hid its ancient Hebrew Pentateuch, or Torah scroll, to save it from destruction. After Dutch rule was established, they recovered it completely uninjured in 1668.
