Ernakulam District Heritage Museum
A Dutch kitchen with a heavy oven, copper and brass pots, inside.
Ernakulam District Heritage Museum fills Bastion Bungalow on Napier Street, a Dutch house on an old Fort Kochi bastion. It is open 9am to 1pm and 2pm to 4.30pm, and shut on Mondays and national holidays, so plan a morning or an afternoon visit.
Inside, the galleries trace Kerala’s trade through old ports, sea routes and maps, including the Tabula Peutingeriana. A display covers the Dutch kitchen and its utensils, and another covers the Hortus Malabaricus. The building also has two colonial-era cannons and a tunnel in its basement.
The Portuguese built Fort Immanuel in the 16th century. The Dutch destroyed it in 1663, but the Stormberg Bastion stood, and they built the bungalow on it. The British named it Bastion Bungalow and used it as a residence and office for government officials. The state archaeology department declared the building a protected monument in 1999, and the museum opened to the public in 2016.
