Aspinwall House
The main Biennale venue, once headquarters of a British trading firm.
Aspinwall House is a large sea-facing heritage property on Calvetty Road in Fort Kochi. Its compound holds office buildings, a residential bungalow and several warehouses, spread across the grounds, and it is one of the main venues of the Kochi-Muziris Biennale.
Allow time for the walk between the buildings on foot, because they are not close together. The house has been part of the Biennale since its first edition in 2012, when it showed the work of 44 artists.
The site was the business premises of Aspinwall & Company Ltd, founded in 1867 by the English trader John H. Aspinwall. The firm traded coconut oil, pepper, timber and spices, and later coir, coffee, tea and rubber. Its warehouses stored these goods. On 4 January 1889 the Great Fire of Cochin destroyed the warehouses and goods of several trading firms, Aspinwall & Co. among them, and the house was reconstructed after it.
