Princess Street

One theory: the name traces to pirate William Kidd, nicknamed Prince.

All 1 photographs

Princess Street is one of Fort Kochi’s best-known old streets, lined with cafés, guesthouses, shops, and colonial-era buildings. It may never have had a princess: one local theory says the name evolved from “Prince’s Street”, linked to the pirate William Kidd, who was nicknamed Prince. The story is a theory, not settled history, but it gives the street a memorable name. The street is pedestrian-only, relaxed, and walkable. Notable spots include Trouvaille, Loafers Corner Cafe, Preethi Stores, Club House Restaurant, Jetty Restaurant, and Kochi Books. Short walk from Kashi Art Cafe, Santa Cruz Basilica, Vasco Da Gama Square, Chinese Fishing Nets, and Kochi Water Metro. Open daily 9 AM–11 PM; free entry.
