Learn macrame knots and take home a handmade piece. Workshop at Artiko Tales in in Mattancherry, Fort Kochi
There's something satisfying about making something with your hands that you can wear the same evening. This Saturday, you can do exactly that at a macrame workshop in Mattancherry.
WISHIVV Handmade Creations is running a 3-hour session at Artiko Tales Art Studio on Bazaar Road. The workshop covers foundation knots and a simple pattern, and by the end of it, you walk out with a finished handmade piece.
Macrame is a knotting technique that uses cord or string instead of needles or hooks. No machines, no power tools. Just your hands and some patience. The craft has roots going back centuries, and it's seen a big comeback in recent years, with people making everything from wall hangings and plant holders to jewellery and bags.
The word "macramé" is derived from the 13th-century Arabic word migramah (مقرمة), meaning "fringe" or "embroidered veil." Arab weavers used decorative knots to finish the edges of hand-loomed fabrics, such as towels, shawls, and veils. Beyond aesthetics, these knots helped secure the loose threads at the ends of a woven piece to prevent fraying.
This beginner friendly workshop focuses on the basics: foundation knots and a simple pattern.

Artiko Tales hosts workshops, along with weekend art classes for kids every Saturday and Sunday. Their studio also features an art material shop, an exhibition hall with a gallery space, and a selection of their own products for sale. In addition to their regular schedule, Artiko occasionally conducts external workshops. They also offer live portraits and commissioned paintings at a per-piece rate. They provide rental options for their workspace and workshop areas for those looking to conduct their own events or work in a creative environment.

If you've been meaning to try a hands-on craft but haven't gotten around to it, this is a low-pressure way to start. No prior experience needed, and macrame is one of those crafts where the learning curve is gentle. The basic knots are simple. The patterns build from there.
