Macrame Workshop: Make Your Own Jewellery [April 4]

There's something satisfying about making something with your hands that you can wear the same evening. This Saturday, you can do exactly that at a macrame workshop in Mattancherry.

WISHIVV Handmade Creations is running a 3-hour session at Artiko Tales Art Studio on Bazaar Road. The workshop covers foundation knots and a simple pattern, and by the end of it, you walk out with a finished handmade piece.

What You'll Learn

Macrame is a knotting technique that uses cord or string instead of needles or hooks. No machines, no power tools. Just your hands and some patience. The craft has roots going back centuries, and it's seen a big comeback in recent years, with people making everything from wall hangings and plant holders to jewellery and bags.

The word "macramé" is derived from the 13th-century Arabic word migramah (مقرمة), meaning "fringe" or "embroidered veil." Arab weavers used decorative knots to finish the edges of hand-loomed fabrics, such as towels, shawls, and veils. Beyond aesthetics, these knots helped secure the loose threads at the ends of a woven piece to prevent fraying.

This beginner friendly workshop focuses on the basics: foundation knots and a simple pattern.
