Cochin International Airport
First airport in the world to run fully on its own solar power.
Cochin International Airport is Kochi’s main airport, at Nedumbassery about 25 kilometres northeast of the city centre. It is the busiest airport in Kerala, handling more than 63% of the state’s air passengers in 2025, and it handled more than 11 million passengers in the 2025-26 fiscal year.
The airport became the world’s first fully solar powered airport in 2015, when a dedicated solar plant was inaugurated. It won the United Nations Champions of the Earth award in 2018. Solar carports cover the parking at the two main passenger terminals, with a combined capacity of 5.1 MW.
The international Terminal 3 opened in March 2017 in traditional Kerala style, themed on Thrissur Pooram. Fifteen life-size fibre elephants in traditional costume stand in the departure area to greet travellers. The domestic Terminal 1 reopened after renovation on 12 December 2018, with 56 check-in counters.
Feeder buses connect the airport with Aluva Metro station, a stop on the Kochi Metro line.
