Chellanam Beach Kochi

A wall of tetrapods shows the scale of the coastal erosion here.

All 1 photographs

Chellanam Beach is a working fishing coast on the sea south of Kochi, where a seawall now stands between the waves and the village. The wall is just over seven kilometres long and is built from granite and concrete tetrapods at a cost of ₹344 crore. The Pallithode-Chellanam-Kochi Beach Road runs through the village. It is listed as open from 9am to 5pm every day.

The seawall is also a walkway, so you can walk its length above the water. It is the longest coastal protection work in Keralam. Chellanam harbour is one of the main fishing centres in Kochi. The boats coming and going are the thing to watch from the wall.

The sea has been taking this shore for years. Cyclone Tauktae in 2021 submerged homes here, and the village opened a relief camp at St. Mary’s School. Earlier geo-tube attempts failed before the tetrapod wall was built. Close to 120 displaced families have since returned, and land prices have risen.
