Bolghatty Island

Once the seat of the British Resident, flag flown high above the island.

Bolghatty Island, also called Mulavukad, sits in Kochi’s backwaters and is reached by the Goshree bridges from the mainland and from Vallarpadam. The Dutch palace stands at the island’s southern tip, on about eight acres of lawns and old trees.

The palace has tiled roofs, wood-framed windows, large halls and strong pillars, all in the Dutch style. Dutch traders built it in 1744, and it later became the governor’s residence for the commander of Dutch Malabar. It is believed to be one of the oldest Dutch palaces outside the Netherlands.

The British leased the palace in 1909 and made it the seat of the British Resident of Kochi during the British Raj. After independence in 1947 the state took it over, and it opened as a heritage hotel resort in 1976.

A nine-hole golf course, set up in 1923, still encircles the palace. The Kochi International Marina on the island can host up to 34 yachts.
